A Childhood Immersed in Music

Raised in Old Bennington, Vermont, Erica grew up in a lively home filled with music—and 26 pianos. Surrounded by a family of seven pianists and educators, she began playing at age three and teaching piano at age nine.

Summers were spent at Summer Sonatina, her family’s renowned piano camp, where she developed her natural talent for inspiring students of all ages.

In fact, by age 11, Erica was commuting five hours each way every week to study at The Juilliard School Pre-College Division in New York City. She performed her orchestral debut that same year. Subsequently, she performed as a soloist with the Albany, Nashua, and Vermont Symphony Orchestras.

From Miss Vermont to The Piano Matchmaker™

While in college at SUNY Purchase, Erica competed in the Miss America Scholarship Pageant to help finance her dream of owning a Steinway grand piano. Crowned Miss Vermont 1985, she won a major talent award at Miss America in Atlantic City. As a result, she purchased her Steinway & Sons piano.

Armed with her new grand piano, she then launched a vibrant private teaching studio in New York City and she quickly gained recognition among serious musicians.

However, a skiing injury forced a pause in her concert performance career. Erica redirected her passion toward helping others connect with music. Consequently, while earning her MBA, she joined the iconic Steinway & Sons showroom in New York City.

While keeping track of each of the 400 instruments on the floor, Erica developed an extraordinary ability to memorize each piano’s serial number, tonal character, and action sensitivity. As a result, over nearly a decade as Steinway’s top sales representative globally, she paired non-players, aspiring students, and world-renowned concert artists with the exact piano that she knew was born for them.

Fortuitously, Erica’s unique approach caught the attention of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist James B. Stewart, who profiled her in an 8-page feature story for The New Yorker (“Matchmaker”).
